The question of whether it's worthwhile working towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) before eventually seeking Chartered Engineer (CEng) depends on your educational qualifications, career stage and industry sector.
One of the most common dilemmas for engineering professionals in the United Kingdom is whether they should seek to become an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) before becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Both are highly esteemed Engineering Council recognised courses but they have different career levels, academic achievements and work interests.

Chartered Engineers (CEng) solve an engineering problem using new or existing technologies, by innovating, creating and changing may have technical accountability for complex systems which involve a high degree of risk. Incorporated Engineers (IEng) support and oversee the use of existing and emerging technology, and can engage in engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation.
In reality the competency difference is of depth and orientation. A degree of IEng is a very strategic and rewarding step for many engineers. If any of the following conditions apply, you should consider getting IEng first:
Academic base is the most pragmatic factor. IEng is usually only offered in conjunction with an accredited BEng (Hons) degree, but is not offered for CEng. IEng is the most appropriate and attainable title to apply for for anyone with a BEng (Bachelor's Degree) who is not intending to pursue a Master's Degree at University. It is possible to obtain a BEng with CEng by taking the "Technical Report" route although this is very time consuming and challenging.
According to Engineering Council, IEng is a person who maintains and manages uses of current and developing technology. IEng is an appropriate qualification for anyone who generally works with project management, manufacturing control, maintenance, technical sales or the application of current engineering principles to practical problems.
CEng can be achieved with years of Initial Professional Development (IPD) through the Professional Review process. Where you already have a good standard of competency, gaining IEng may make you more immediately marketable with a CV, instil professional credibility and boost your salary – instead of taking another 3-5 years to complete the CEng requirements.
The IEng Professional Review is a bit less strenuous than the CEng interview. Pass it and you can do the Engineering Council's UK-SPEC framework and it's much easier to do when you apply for CEng later if you wish to do so. You should not take IEng and pass straight through to CEng when appropriate.
IEng is a great qualification, but is not a requirement to progress to CEng. If you should skip IEng and go straight to CEng:
You have high educational requirements for CEng if you are studying at a university that already provides a valid MEng or a relevant Master's degree. It would be redundant administrative hindrance to do an IEng first.
